Yes, we admit that sometimes we're lazy, too. But most of the time we simply enjoy what we're doing, which happens to be type design.
And yes, we use computers to produce these typefaces. But one of our basic premises is not to let the computer lead the design process. Looking back at the type design of the past years, it seemed that many creations were overruled by the imaginary perfection of the machine-made form. Not the technically perfect and reproduceable outline is important, but the overall unique aesthetic concept and terms of readability, which do not naturally concur with the computers abilities. Therefore we do use the latest technologies but originally our fonts are truly handmade.

Robert Strauch (*1973) studied – as we all did – graphic design in the same old brick building in Augsburg, Germany (1994–99) and extended this »basic training« through another year at the École Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Strasbourg, France. He founded his own shop in 2001 and teaches calligraphy, type design and typography in various workshops and seminars. In 2005 he was honored with the »type design oscar« (TDC award) for his oldstyle typeface »Fabiol«. |
